The prevalence of childhood obesity has been increasingly unanticipated worldwide. Many researches have associated childhood obesity to fast foods, thus intake of fruits and vegetables has been on the downtrend because they're expensive, television viewing, less physical activity and engaging more to high technology gadgets that children use while sitting also known as “couch potato lifestyle”, overeating or binge eating, and the most controversial is parental negligence.

Parents in the 21st century have a busier work schedule than before. Typically, mothers, for instance, stayed home preparing home cooked food and taking care of the children at home. A father, they say, brings home the bacon. But as of today, both parents, because of the demands and needs of the family, they work to sustain the demands of their children within the society. Parents provide their children instant foods with fewer nutrients, give wants of their children to reciprocate their absence. Gone are the days when we as kids were able to run around, climb trees, swim rivers, catch dragonflies, play games like “patentero”, “taguan”, tag, jumping rope, chinese garter, etc.” Visiting with grandparents and hanging out with friends, with nary a thought about child molesters in our midst. Those days are gone, that’s why today’s children are not as active or as adventurous as we were because of these things. Through athletic competitions and other school activities, our children are taught life changing skills that they will use in their adulthood. I find that the children now are highly intelligent and very adept in technology. A two-year-old can surf the net and play games even without instructions from adults. They might lack out in physical activities like we used to do but they are intellectually gifted in more ways than we were at their age.

Take the time to talk to a kid and you will be astonished how mature he/she sounds. This study has caught my cognizance for some reasons that have affected me as a parent and as a researcher. It may provide us more insights into what obesity and other eating disorders are. It is for parents’ knowledge on how to deal with the strains of life pertaining to developmental issues on children. This may enlighten every individual the effect of fast foods and that home-cooked foods are more nutritious. This would also help us realize that childhood obesity can lead to multiple health risks such as blood pressure problems, respiratory abnormalities, dyslipidemia, and disturbances of glucose metabolism, and this issue should not be disregarded by the parents, caregivers, food producers and especially the government.

For some particular concerns, it may help improve one’s sedentary lifestyle into a more productive and energetic one, that involves the bonding of parent-child relationship and make it stronger. With a rapid increase of childhood obesity in the world, this should catch the attention of all the health specialists like the nutritionists, the dieticians, the developmental and behavioral pediatricians and of course most that should be concerned are the parents themselves. Parents should be more aware and precautious on the food intake of their children. Both food intake and activity in young children are strongly influenced by parents. Be of good example on their eating habits as this would contribute to the children’s well-being and good health habits.
